As I sat down at a favourite Vietnamese restaurant, I looked down to an etiquette textbook-perfect place setting. Without any fanfare or obsessive corrections, the placement, alignment, and spacing felt like the stars were aligned. It was subtly personal. I knew I was welcome. I could feel their care. Even before a word was spoken, kindness and love were embracing the world around me.
It may not seem like much. I do not think anyone else at the table noticed. The outcome was the same, laughter, smiles, and an amazing sense of hopeful possibilities. It was an amazing meal, supported in a way by actions and attention to detail by those present to serve.
On a clear start of a new day, I hear Life reminding me of the visual lessons and experiences gifted to me over a place setting. Etiquette is a choice. With each principle, I can see ideas on how I can lift the moments of the day. I doubt many will notice, and yet, with the experience still fresh, I know the experience and outcome will be filled with the best I have to offer.
Care is a mix of instruction, attention, and action. Instructions open the door to the combination and outcomes that follow. They come in many forms, from reference books to simple asks. “Say hello to Priscilla and Aquila, who have worked hand in hand with me in serving Jesus.” (Romans 16.3). When one takes this and puts it into action with attention to the details, everyone experiences the joy of acceptance and the experiential warmth of belonging.
Kindness is often found in the attitude and intent behind care. With the meal, the smile, attentive eyes, and patient gentleness took the simple act of ordering to a new level. The stage for a great experience was set and cared for. The sense of happiness and hope began to reveal itself even as we sat down.
Life is divine when care and kindness are in the moment. In freely sharing with others, we discover what life’s best is for all.
