A Vietnamese artist captured an elephant in a way that pushes me to be open, passionate, and relevant. I love the colours capturing so much more than I initially imagined. I find myself reflecting on the softness of an elephant’s normal gate versus what unfolds when they are on the edge of control. Even the body language in the painting takes me to new places. I find myself thinking back and looking forward, metaphorically sharing space with the elephant as we take on the day ahead.
Life is so much more than me. As precious and priceless as I am, there is so much more at play. Even as I consider how dominant my needs and wants are, I pause and remember those who are struggling to hold onto hope. Given the news and beyond demanding my attention, there are examples of actions while other areas can be described in eery silence. In each extreme, kindness, care, and compassion are in short supply.
The rise of self-centric views, with individuals as well as nations, is on the rise. As much as I understand the move, I also know it is short-sighted. This is not new. In times past, “Moses and Isaiah both commented on this: fed up with their quarrelsome, self-centred ways, God blurred their eyes and dulled their ears, shut them in on themselves in a hall of mirrors, and they’re there to this day.” (Romans 11.8) Just because it is growing again, does not mean it has to always be this way.
Each moment in one’s life is a choice. What we do, be it a word, choice, or action, expresses the intent of our decision. I find myself looking at the elephant and hearing the call for today and beyond. Be present and passionate. Be engaged and moving with intent. Be open and aware. Every individual has a role to play. Each can be a messenger of love. Embracing, accepting, and respecting are essential to intentional steps toward a better future. I trust the herd to build momentum on what starts with one.
