When I have an opportunity to enjoy a masala dosa, it is always more than the dish in front of me. In my pause of thanksgiving, I reconnect with Divinity and all the faces that have presented her in my life. I see friends from Southern India and beyond. In the moment’s reflection, I re-experience their smiles and the light in their eyes. I sense the hope coming from within their souls. We laugh again with the same optimism for what we have shared and what is to come.
Memories are pearls that can enrich one’s life. I find them to be energy tablets. Each is unique in the mix that it brings. Foundational elements include friendship, trust, quietness, harmony, and a sense of purpose. Some of the faces are no longer with me except in my memories. In my silent tears of thankfulness, I recognise the value their presence gifted me. I am different because of each relationship. What they have left with me is now experienced as a calling of purpose with care and kindness.
Remembering is a doorway to awareness, insight, and learning. I choose what I will do with each thread. I can use it to take the first step within my heart and soul towards being better than I am. I can also use this as an example and platform to connect with others. I read the note a writer left with his readers, “Say hello to your pastoral leaders and all the congregations. Everyone here in Italy wants to be remembered to you.” (Hebrews 13.24). He connected people. In addition to being enriched by the experience, he created new doorways to learning and growth.
Our past is a call to step forward. My memories always leave me in the present moment, leaving me with the question that remains the same: What will I do with what I know? I know this is an opportunity to use my gifts for good. I understand that I am free and able to take the call. The opportunity is here. Now is the time.
