I stepped out into the afternoon sun and stumbled as I moved towards the car. I looked down, thinking that there must have been something I missed at my feet. I was confused as I visually examined the flat surface, with nothing visible impeding my way. As the wave overwhelmed me, I realised I had faltered in the afternoon heat. Summer was on its way. With this reality, I realised it was already here.
I had walked into the dried fruit and nut shop fifteen minutes earlier. While intense, I had not paid particular attention to the sun and its force on everything outside and unprotected. The combination of air conditioning, air movement, and shade set me up for the shock. As I walked from shade to sun and then back to shade, I realised each exposure to the sun was stifling, intense, and overwhelming. Even when I could see it coming, I still faltered with the exposure.
Not all stumbling blocks that can trip us up are visible. Even the best, strongest, and most alert falter at times. `If one is aware and alert, one can be on guard, ready to steady oneself as one takes care with each step. The old warning remains as true today as when it was first expressed. “So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God.” (Hebrews 3.12)
Being prepared does not mean danger is avoided. I faltered. However, I did not fall. I was caught in a moment of ignorance. The warning signs were there. The obvious was visible. Candidly, I walked right into it. I was also hydrated, cool, and moving. The car was my temporary shelter and place of safety. Once reminded, I knew what I had to do.
Life moments will come with overwhelming opposition. With the summer still growing, I know it will get worse. I also know that today is an opportunity. I can be an oasis for anyone in need, including myself.
