There is a unique outcome when people commit to common values, working together, and being transparent; they become family. This unique community is build of like-minded individuals that see life through the lens of multiple individuals while trusting and remaining open to engaging fully in the act of living without barriers. In truth filled families, diversity finds birth and life. In truth families, everyone can and often does win.
As I look back, having experienced it on different occasions, albeit often in short spells, I find the idea of being a part of this type of a community compellingly attractive. Who could refuse the opportunity to be something greater than trying to do it on your own? Why would anyone deny the joy that can come from sharing life with another? Is there any reason to ignore the one framework that gives more strength than it demands?
It is too easy to give the clich? answer. In truth, being part of a family takes courage. Honestly, being part of a family is not always easy. Sacrifice, working in faith that the common good is ultimately better than an immediate gratification for self is not always intuitive. For many, myself included, it is extremely difficult to step out and be vulnerable. It is not easy to give up control. It is not always natural.
I am encouraged as I watch others reach into and for community and family. I find myself in the presence of Hope as they take brave, bold steps into a new world. The process is often filled with chaos, uncertainty, and even pain, yet the potential for a world filled with compassion, mercy, and acceptance is wonderfully real! It is good to be alive. It is good to realize that with today's dawn I have the opportunity to join others in making this world a better place. I can be part of something great! We are, after all, all members of God's family.
“They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.” (Acts 2.42)
