In preparation to be on my own for a couple of weeks, I ended up in the fruit and vegetable market in Al Mina. I always enjoy my excursions, and this one was both fun and insightful. As I considered peppers and chilis, I realised that in addition to colours, taste, and heat, I also had the country of origin. Emirati, Egyptian, and Jordan were in focus today. I could not help listening the Life talk about extended family and the lessons I find myself holding as today begins.
Our differences do not define us. It is in our differences that one finds different approaches to solving life challenges. It is in our diversity that one finds one’s voice as well as the ability to hear the other. Differences and diversity can be seen as Divinity’s way of expressing herself and the many ways She relates to us.
Our cultures have more in common than one first realises. Today marks the end of a time of prayer and fasting. It is a time to celebrate our shared conversation with Divinity and our respect for each other. As I considered the peppers and chilis, I realised that each farmer has contributed similar elements to the outcome that was different and fun in their way. I share a thirst to know I belong. I share a longing to be accepted, just as I am. I share a desire to be part of something greater than myself.
Our uniqueness is an opportunity to learn and grow together. Our individuality offers multiple benefits. We can see more. We can hear each other in greater ways. We bring an amazing ability to respond in the moment to what is needed. We can, together, accomplish what otherwise seems impossible.
Today, in thankfulness, I echo Paul’s greetings through his letter; “Hello to Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas – and all the Christians who live with them.” (Romans 16.15). To believers and beyond, Eid Mubarak! It is time to celebrate and feast together. We are Divinity’s family. Hope is among us.
