It is easy to get distracted with fancy things. Big cities, bright lights, and the stars which seem to mark restaurants, hotels, and every other choice. I watched the kids next door enjoying their above ground pool, jumping in from the roof of the house it was near and sunbathing on the roof or my father’s driveway, and I was overwhelmed with memories of days long forgotten. Of hanging out with my friends at a swimming pool. Of those moments where being smart and safe gave way to fun and adventure. Moments where living in the moment came with endless amounts of hope and happiness.
As I watched the kids enjoying themselves, several lessons came in the form of reminders.
True friends can be described by the way they touch your heart. Back then and now, the laughter and smiles reflected love, kindness, and fun. Something was lost as I grew up only to be rediscovered as I think of the friends who bring laughter, tears, and warm hearts.
Friendship was never about the money, or the toys, or anything else we chased over the years. I watch the joy which comes with stuff recycled, reused, and at times repurposed, and the true source of the smiles is clear. One heart to another, magic comes when agendas are only about fun, intent is all about being in the moment, and everyone is part of the extended family.
As the youngest boy came to show me his soccer medal for the spring tournament, we kicked his ball around. Old and young, strangers yet not, sharing a love for the game and an enjoying of being in the moment. There were no titles. There was no pomp. Hanging out, both playing barefoot, and enjoying the moment.
I always love rediscovering people, living, sharing, and giving. I have high hopes for the garden, life, and the endless possibilities this scene represents. The psalmist’s note lingers; Divinity “struck down the famous kings, His love never quits.” (Psalm 136.18) Divinity is enjoying the scene, just like the kids. Everyone is welcome.
