Nine months ago I stood in front of a roomful of fresh corporate recruits. As I searched my mind for the truth of the journey we were about to embark on, I uttered the truth of my fear. “There are several things I know for sure about our journey into the future. We are embarking on an unknown path. It is filled with hopes and dreams. You have placed your trust in these dreams. I believe but I also must warn you. There will be up and downs along the way. We will great moments and difficult ones. There is only one surety of this journey. We, you and I, will be p#$$ed on.”
A human pregnancy later, my words have unfolded as I expected. We have had great moments and difficult ones. We have done what many said was impossible. We have achieved a great thing. Along the way, many have p*&^ed on us. The dream is unfolding but there is a long way to go.
It is an interesting environment to recruit others to the team. I find myself replaying an old story. “Even though people admired them a lot, outsiders were wary about joining them. On the other hand, those who put their trust in the Master were added right and left, men and women both.” (Acts 5.14)
The story and questions do not end with work. How do I explain what will happen if someone embraces God? It is easy to predict what will happen in the future. There will be many great highs and difficult lows. Others are going to rain on your journey. It will be an incredible journey but there will be moments that you question the journey.
I understand why many are not willing to leap into the unknown. There is an unending list of reasons to be afraid. Candidly, they are real. They exist. They will bite. They are also not the final chapter of the story.
For those brave enough to embrace compassion and community, life will unfold with peace and hope. It's a worthy quest.
