The note did not give me any indication of the details. “I am working on a new project. Are you interested?”
In my youth I received some advice that has stayed with me; “never say no to something that you do not know what you are saying no to.” It sounds like something we would never do; however, I often catch myself saying no long before I know or understand the details.
“I am curious, let’s meet.”
As we talked about the project and the possible opportunities over a cup of fresh coffee made from El Salvadorian beans, I could sense the level of interest growing within me. As if everything within me knew what might be possible before I realized it, my mind was spinning with alternative approaches to take the opportunity into reality, people that could help with the transformation, spin-off projects that could materialize, and the rewards and celebrations that would follow as we delivered the impossible.
As I listened, considering the information and insights being shared, I realized that our conversation was filling in the gaps because of our shared experience and work together.
Trust provided a foundation for the conversation to go in directions that was helpful for everyone involved. Without it, either or both of us would have changed the subject. With it, boundaries and barriers were automatically lower.
Collaboration is more that just working together. Collaboration is the ability to let another work and share without needing to validate and verify! Collaborative conversations lead to more than either imagine at the start. Additionally, hope and courage grow along the way.
As we wrapped up I found myself reflecting on a psalm; “Zion, you listen and take heart! Daughters of Zion, sing your hearts out: God has done it all, has set everything right.” (Psalm 97.8) In this case, a lot of work has already been done. The stage is set. It is a time of hope and possibilities! And it is just the beginning. There are roles and opportunities to be seized. We can fill the gaps.
