Some cycles never end. Restaurants with bad service rarely get better before there is a major remodeling and change of management. Bad music doesn’t improve with age. Cars running poorly do not run better unless something is done about the problem(s). Yesterday’s events are today’s norm.
Sadly the observation of unending cycles doesn’t end with things we experience. It also includes your life and mine. Far too much in our lives is the same today as it was yesterday and year. We hold the same priorities close to our heart. We fight the same battles. We find ourselves caught in the same weaknesses we have been trying to shed for decades.
Some, myself included at times, try to rationalize the lack of movement by an implied “I am close to arriving” (at least in this area), so no movement is either needed or attempted. It is as if we want finality in our lives; for change to stop and, we think, real living to begin! We believe we deserve a break. We have earned our rest. Life has taken enough, someone (usually God) owes us.
First the warning; the end of evil’s (self centeredness and glory) road is destruction. Our actions on this path will be about a finality with includes Divinity’s hand. Just as in days of old, “God will destroy the splendid trees and lush gardens. The Assyrian body and soul will waste away to nothing like a disease-ridden invalid. A child could count what's left of the trees on the fingers of his two hands.” (Isaiah 10.18, 19)
Second, the good news; God is on our side. Destruction of our heart and soul is not required. The path to destruction is optional! There is a path where we partner with God in compassion, hope, and love. We live in fellowship with Divinity and our communities. Everything is possible and is realized in time. As improbable as it might seem, this option is open to each with the dawn. We can choose. We can be part of something wonderful. We can make a difference.
