The vision of the flame within the paper balloon carrying my prayer, aspirations, and dreams to the heavens lingered with me long after it extinguished itself. It surfaced today as I consider the past, the present, and the day ahead. I live in a place filled with the evidence of hope. Construction cranes are visible across the skyline. Profits and business success are common headlines in the media. Everything points to a better future.
In looking beyond the immediate to the broader community at large, the story is less about hope and more of survival. Battles of all types used to be the exception; now they are the norm. I find myself replaying the words of a writer. “I looked long and hard at what goes on around here, and let me tell you, things are bad. And people feel it.” (Ecclesiastes6.1). As I struggle to balance what I can see with what I hope for, I can hear Life offering me guiding whispers for today.
We live in a battle greater than we can imagine. You and I are in this battle together. The least I can do for another is to avoid making it worse! The debate between good and evil, community and self, right and wrong, will only be settled in the fullness of our greater world and story. For now, I find myself in the pain and angst that grows when harmony, care, and compassion are secondary to individual achievements.
My answer is the fire that lifts my spirit to higher ground. It is a place where I find myself closer to Divinity, aware of what She offers to every child. In my awareness of unconditional acceptance, belonging, and the strength residing within, I find myself filled with purpose and courage. I can be the difference. I can defend the powerless, fight for the oppressed, and support those trying to take their next step.
In becoming the fire today, I accept Divinity’s call. I lift others higher. I carry their message beyond. I will burn bright while it is my time.
