From a distance it is incredible to watch flags responding to the winds. It is as if they know what is coming, shaping their self to respond in the ways best fitted to the forces at hand. It is a grand sight – full of movement, interactions, and change.
Today is the first day of hurricane season. As I write everything around me is the picture of all. Warm summer breezes dominate the day with promises of even brighter sun, still air, and lazy afternoons. The danger in the days to come seems almost impossible to comprehend yet the warning flags are here. The seas are warm, inviting storms to strengthen if and when they come through. Other conditions express warning just as strong. Yet all around us the destruction of yesterdays still remain, unfinished business waiting for attention and action.
In a similar setting of old the warning was given as the reporters brought us up on the details; “The banquet is spread, the guests reclining in luxurious ease, eating and drinking, having a good time, and then, ‘To arms, princes! The fight is on!’” (Isaiah 21.5)
You and I know there are needs all around us. We understand time is short – especially for those unable to defend themselves or hold onto hope. The warning flags are out – for communities and nations. Yet the stillness of the world around me is frightening. Even in the bright light of day – with human pain, anguish, and fear out on display – one find him or her self caught in the shade of a lazy summer’s day. The warning flags are here, waving for all to see.
I do not know what tomorrow will bring. I do know there will be moments of beauty and destruction, laughter and tears, joy and sorrow. I also know there will be moment of opportunity where you and I can respond. In this state of chaos we have the freedom to act. To myself and to you I say –
Take care to see, understand, and prepare.
Be ready to act.
Seize the day.
