There is a quiet stillness in the morning that I have come to associate with the Emirates. Being up just before sunrise allows one to watch the changing scene. The stillness and empty roads slowly give way to long growing shadows from the rising sun, commuters, school buses, and the sense of tidal changes in the waterways around the islands. The change is never sudden. You can be watching and while it seems quiet, at some point, you become aware and know that the city is coming alive. Everything is on the move.
As I reflected on the metaphor, a building mural on Yas Island came to mind. For me, the sandy background, sense of flight, and overall sense of always moving linger long after the mural is out of sight. There is a restless energy about it as if it reflects the need for flying to a new place without the confidence that arriving will be the answer anyone is looking for. Looking forward to today with this in mind leaves me with the following.
Taking care of myself begins the day before. How yesterday finished is the foundation for the day ahead. My willingness to reflect and let go, permitting myself to sleep without constraints or obligations, is a formula that restores my heart and mind. The process reconnects my heart with my body. I can feel my values and priorities.
Engagement includes getting ready, dressed, and prepared for the day. A cup of coffee and breakfast are the finishing touches to a series of steps. When I start early, my focus is clear. It is as if I answered the old siren call; “Get out of bed and get dressed! Don’t loiter and linger, waiting until the very last minute. Dress yourselves in Christ and be up and about!” (Romans 13.14)
Every moment is game time. I am prepared. I am ready. I know there will be knocks and challenges ahead. These are the elements that come with the opportunity to be involved. No time to sit, it is time to fly.
