Reading a book with footnotes brings with it a decision that is similar to visiting an historical site. You can either take a guide or put in the preparation time reading and studying about the location. Without one of these alternatives, you can never be sure if you experienced everything there was to experience because you will have no idea of what you missed. Life is a book with footnotes.
First, we cannot experience the fullness of what life can be without teachers. From our first infant moments we are dependent on the teaching and guidance of others. Ignoring this fact as we get older does not change its fundamental truth.
Second, everything about life is a decision. Initially we find ourselves focusing on what we need and want to exists, however the crux of that question never leaves us. We face it every morning as we wake and again with each step during the day. The only question is what drives us? Are we consumed by our basic needs, self desires, or is there something greater?
Third, our Creator has given us signs, footnotes as it were, to help us understand what is happening all around us. The footnotes are there, regardless of our decision if we will take notice, explore, or examine. The notes are more than signals; they are soul conversations that can bring vivid color to the movements and currents of the day. Footnotes are whispers from a God who is too kind to shout.
Today I found two notes that struck a cord.
First, “Moral dropouts won’t listen to their elders; welcoming correction is a mark of good sense.” (Proverbs 15.5)
Second, God continued to whisper his love, acceptance, and longing to walk together with me. The signals yesterday were clear, however most of the time I was not listening! They gathered force with the umpteenth “ibid” and I finally saw some of the same things I know He is trying to tell you.
“I love you so much it hurts. Come, let us walk together. I want to share everything.”
