The business meeting was at the end of the workday in the local pub. The mural on the wall captures several scenes, each sharing a New Orleans flair. One scene kept my attention longer than the others. Initially, I was confused. It was the quietest picture. There were individual characters with few groups to catch one’s attention. Nothing was out of proportion to the other. As I reflected, I realised every individual in this part of the mural represented a friend from a time in my life. While time may have passed since we were last together, the memories and emotions created by the friendship remain with me.
As the rain dominates my morning, I remember and treasure the lingering traces of friendships within my heart and soul. They may have faded a bit with time. I appreciate how they guided my life at the time. I also realise that my hope is strengthened because of the imprint their kindness and care left with me. Their actions are guides and reminders for the day ahead.
Life is stronger and richer with friends. I have come to appreciate the thirst within me to be in relationships. Each is unique. Each impacts my view and response to life in ways I did not anticipate. I am thankful for their patience and endurance, then and now. Their willingness to accept me as I was, gave me the courage to become what I am.
Friendships may fade yet they never leave if we remember. One author left me with the observation that “You’ll fold them up like a worn-out cloak, and lay them away on the shelf. But you’ll stay the same, year after year; you’ll never fade, you’ll never wear out.” (Hebrews 1.12) As we endure and remember, the friendships in our will be there to nurture and sustain us.
Acts of kindness and care can create opportunities for more friends. Kindness and care are windows to individuals who can make life richer, more interesting, and fun. The steps I take today can be an opportunity towards new friendships.
