Gap Travelers

Gap year is a special rite of passage for young adults in Europe, especially the UK.  Preparation for university is complete, most have their place in higher education reserved for the year after next, and the only task at hand is enjoying the time in between now and then.  The world calls, extending an invitation that is readily accepted by many.  Frequently this is his or her first experience away from home, country, and things familiar.  Most handle the shift just fine, yet for the few it is a time that forever scars their life.  Often the adventure changes their hearts, souls, and bodies in ways never imagined.
I’m not sure Carli noticed the two girls enjoying the evening.  The friends seemed oblivious of the danger they were putting themselves in.  As a father walking besides his daughter that easily could have been in their shoes, the scene was far too real.  Did they have any idea?  Were they in any condition to make any kind of decision requiring wisdom and strength?  Was there anyone watching out for them?
The questions kept coming, long after we passed the scene and were on the way back to our hotel.  I have no idea what happened later that night.  I did not read about anything in the paper the next day, but I doubt it would have made the headlines even if evil had found a home.  The cynical side of me wanted to warn them; “You've been hit with a double dose of trouble—does anyone care?  Assault and battery, hunger and death—will anyone comfort?”  (Isaiah 51.19)  All this and more will come your way.  It is of your own making.
Even as my fear, frustration, and anger grew I found myself looking in a metaphorical mirror.  Am I any different?  Do I realize the danger I frequently put myself in, carelessly exposing my soul to Evil’s power?  Given arrogance, pride, and candidly stupidity, will anyone comfort me when I stumble and fall?
Our lives are worth more than our carelessness indicates; at least God thinks so.
