Gates and doorways often look alike. As I take a fresh look in the context of the greater picture, many of the similarities are driven by functional purpose. The fact that all share is the building blocks of a frame and context, a need to keep out intruders, and to secure one’s safety and possessions. Once one address the fundamentals, the fun begins!
Recently, a speaker presented certificates to two individuals. In the middle of his impromptu remarks on the certificates details, he turned to the two doorways in the room and pointed to small distinguishing features on each. His attention to details pushed me to a fresh examination of the gates and doorways I pass through, real and figuratively.
Even when it comes to the gate to my home. Have I taken the time to remember the features that went into its design? They were so important at the beginning. Even now, they are still important! Since the speaker’s comments, each time I walk through these gates I find myself pausing and reflecting. I am walking through gates which were thoughtfully design, intentionally crafted, and installed for my use and reflection! Each design element having a purpose and point of inspiration. Simple yet functional. Something that can and will endure.
There are multiple gates in my life that I pass through each day. Doorways to work and making a difference. Gateways to reflection and recovery. Entrances to places of doing business as well as having fun. It is as if each is an old chapter giving way to new one! I can react as if I know what is going to unfold or take each as an opportunity to rediscovery, embrace, and live in the moment that is now.
The doorways and gates include ones where I am invited as well as excluded. There are ones welcoming side by side with others designed to invoke fear. As lessons continue, a psalmist left me with a reminder to take note that “this Temple Gate belongs to God, so the victors can enter and praise.” (Psalm 118.20)
