The day had been overcast, grey, and humid. One knew it was not going to rain, even as one was left with the melancholy feeling that it had been raining for a week. As I walked, a gate caught my eye. Turning, it was as if I was looking at the doorway into a day filled with the sun, light, and just the right balance of warmth. I did not know how I could get from where I was to what I could see, but I wanted to try.
As I wake to a grey sky, I find myself thinking of yesterday’s gate, wondering what this picture and life are teaching me today.
As grey as life might seem, one is only a step away from something new. I turned and I could see a doorway to something missing. It was as if “A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death.” (Romans 8.2) It was there, I was here.
Gates often come with locks and keys; I hold the keys. It is almost too easy for me to forget that, within me, I have the freedom to move and change. I can take steps toward a better future. I can move to the light. I can be a force for good. I can if I am willing to exercise my freedom and choose to move.
Life’s choices are not certainties. We write the story of our lives in a greater story with other writers. Divinity offers to encourage and nurture our steps and the story we are writing. Help is available if one needs it. Given the context, writing in a world with good, bad, and lots of unknown writers, I will accept all the love-based help I can get.
Today is a unique gate. It is a time and place for action. What happens will be the story that reveals the values closest to my heart.
