I have spent the last seven years of trying to drive change across several different organizations. The “challenge” is in many ways really fun. Granted the process can also be frustrating, irritating, and numbing, yet the emotions that come when someone “gets it” is worth every price paid. I have yet to find the formula to predict when the moment of revelation will happen. As I watch, study, and examine other case studies, I find a series of steps being repeated again and again. The sequence goes something like this.
Initial message (idea, vision, possibilities) laid out
Confusion Reigns
Clarification and message refinement
Light begins to dawn
Light bulbs click on – the first step in “getting it” occurs
Many never get past step two. It is as if denial, ignorance, and satisfaction with what is takes over and erects a blockade to the individual’s ability to listen, have an open mind, and to understand. You see case studies across sports (look what happens when a new coach arrives), politics (watch the reaction of the press to a new idea), and even in history. Those closest to Jesus didn’t get what he was saying. When Peter realized he needed to “accept” an offer his response was a classic example of na?ve enthusiasm! “‘Master!’ said Peter. ‘Not only my feet, then. Wash my hands! Wash my head!’” (John 13.9)
For all the weaknesses in Peter’s response the point is that he got it. Far too often I find myself getting comfortable with yesterday’s understanding. I seem to be content with what was, never realizing what could be. It is as if the styles of yesterday are the answer for all times.
Today is an opportunity for you and I to open ourselves up to the possibilities God has for us. I may not always understand, but I do want to “get it” and start the process of walking with the Spirit! Seize the day. Open yourself up to the possibilities. This decision isn’t the end, it is the beginning of real living.
