“All we are and have we owe to God, Holy God of Israel, our King!” Psalm 89.18
Gifts are special; they usually come for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. Every once in awhile they come for no reason at all, just because. Sometimes you receive a gift that you do not even know you have for a long time.
Working with my dad on a project is a gift I did not realize I had and often forget is mine. Dad works hard with the best sense of compensation, time with a friend. Dad gives everything to the effort, is there any other choice that would make sense? Dad gives a little and pushes when it makes sense, some things do come easier with age!
Yesterday was just such a gift. It really did not start out as the ideal plan, rather something that fulfilled a need. Perhaps the best gifts are always in response to a need where there is no requirement on the part of the given to do anything. You see my garage is a walking disaster. A move with too much stuff, no time for organization, and the recipe is ready for baking. Our Sunday tourist activities were very successful so the day’s schedule became quite free. After a morning of errands, it was time for a “project”!
The project solved a critical problem, shelf space. After lots of discussion we waded in and in the end everything came together like we carefully planned. We cut, fit, nailed, and screwed boards and sheets of wood into place in just the right order. The world as I knew it changed for the better.
God knew we might have a problem. Just in case, he planned a special project if we had a need. When we did, the project became His gift to us. God made the effort because he is who he is. Was there any other choice that makes sense? I cannot earn the gift, I do no deserve the gift, but it is mine!
It is for you as well.
