The food court area of the local mall next to where I live has an interesting section where patrons can sit and eat. In addition to having casual sitting options, there are areas separated by bookshelves filled with books, vases, and other mementoes. As I waited, one row of books caught my eye. The way the books faced me metaphorically represented giving and taking. Visually, consumption dominates the scene.
I know I consume more than I give. I love to read, have conversations, and work with others. I like to think that my collaborative approach is driven by an intent to give. Candidly, I am collaborative because I believe it is the best way to be effective. Diversity, shared loads, and a larger vision always make a positive difference in achieving a goal. When I consider the whispered reminder. I begin to visualise how important giving is within each moment and the words and decisions found there. The visuals lead to the understanding that life is found in being in the moment. Giving in the moment is essential, even as one knows the outcome will follow.
Extending this model sets me up with reminders for the day ahead.
I can write as I read. Today will gift me with decisions on engaging, word choices, and opportunities for action. I can embrace each moment, knowing the moment is the goal. In each, life unfolds. The shift from mission-driven to purpose-led leads me to release my focus on the result so I can contribute to the moment itself. I think of the story captured by others and find myself replaying the Christian narrative of Divinity life in the world; as he took the approach of giving first, “he became the source of eternal salvation to all who believingly obey him.” (Hebrews 5.10). Other faith systems have variations, all leading to the outcome that, because they gave, we take and enjoy what they have gifted for us.
Today, I will read and write. May each word and action be a gift of kindness and care, enduring gifts.
