The venue was so familiar. Even now, I do not remember the faces or names of all those that were there. I do remember the laughter and hope. We were so sure. I look back and see the headlights of our lives focused in one direction and one direction only.
As I look to start a new day, the artwork from that time long ago is still in place. While it is faded and the lighting is not straight, the headlights still remind me to look beyond the light and into the shadows and darkness. There is so much more than the chaos and pressures of the moment. The old whispers spoke to me; I can hear them echoing at the start of the day ahead.
Life is a bigger story. I often catch myself looking at my immediate path. When I look up and beyond, I find myself in the presence of others, friends, family, and yes, even Divinity. Being aware that there is something more opens a door to a larger story. It is an invitation to be involved with others in working towards a better future. We are in this story if we can see beyond the dimly lit light in the night.
Adjusting my eyes opens the door to new opportunities. I found myself sitting in the driver’s seat of the old classic. I look across the hood, realising that there were others in the car with me, I could sense the window opening for all of us. In this bigger story, so much was going on. We were the multi-dimensional choir Paul spoke of long ago; “Then we’ll be a choir – not our voices only, but our very lives singing in harmony in a stunning anthem to the God and Father of our Master Jesus!” (Romans 15.6)
Life is moving. When I cannot see beyond the immediate, it is easy to forget the fact that life is in motion. This moment is fleeting. Once gone, another comes. Each is an opportunity to care, to take a step forward with others.
