We hear with our eyes as well as our ears. Researchers remind us that the listening is more than just hearing. Subtle communication forms include the tone of one’s voice, hand gestures, and body language. We also communicate through our words in writing and thoughts in drawings. Unless one is paying attention with every sense, one will miss a significant part of the message.
“Tell me about the rumblings I keep hearing about.”
It was an unusual request that on the surface I would have been reluctant to fulfill. It was interesting to listen to the full message of a wise uncle. The tone of his voice and his body language addressed any reluctance I had. As my story unfolded, his response told me far more than the literal words that reached my ears. His messages reflected a heart filled with wisdom that I respect and admire.
“Take a deep breath and look at the broader picture.”
“Ignore the voices telling you what to do. Only you can decide what is best for you.”
“Follow your heart.”
“Stay the course.”
“In this matter, there is no right or wrong choice.”
The assurance that he would always watch over my steps was there. The confidence he placed in me was encouraging and filled me with courage. It was as if he had taken a volatile situation and diffused the tension within me, imparting a calm and sense of peace that was filled with hope and a sense of wonder.
It felt as if I was listening to wisdom.
Often I listen with half of my senses. I reflect on the words that linger as well as the invitation to listen that has been left with us across generations; “Oh yes, he’s our God, and we’re the people he pastures, the flock he feeds. Drop everything and listen, listen as he speaks.” (Psalm 95.7) My senses fill in between the lines. I hear calls of compassion and love. I feel the touch of hope and possibilities. I realize I am wrapped in mercy and unconditional forgiveness. I hear.
