One of the most hated phrases Cherry and I share is a simple “rise above it”. The idea that this clich? is the answer to wicked problems, a solution for evil situations, or a mantra one must always follow is problematic. I am not suggesting that there is no element of truth within the clich?. I am observing that there is more to life than simply ignoring a wicked situation and moving on as if nothing was happening.
A definition to make this easier; a “wicked” situation is one potentially without cause, answer, or solution, at least an obvious one.
I find myself in the midst of total chaos. The situation is different from anything I remember. It is not as if everything is out of control. In reality, life is more predictable than not. People are behaving as one anticipates, only there are too many of them to keep track of. Teams and individuals are meeting deadlines, even when one is not aware that they existed. Stuff is happening! It is happening everywhere, at all hours, and in all kinds of ways. Pieces are flying everywhere! The questions are of awareness, communication, and understanding. The difficulty lies in knowing, believing, or even having faith that the puzzle everyone is solving is the right one.
In this situation, I have no idea how one takes the high road. It is a wicked situation. Evil and good continue to mix with ease. Commitment and sabotage seem to be familiar friends. One could call everything into question, or nothing. You cannot ignore what is happening. Moving as if everything is ok is simply ignorant, na?ve, and stupid.
Even as I struggle, I hear the Spirits voice, “Listen now, you who know right from wrong, you who hold my teaching inside you: Pay no attention to insults, and when mocked don't let it get you down.” (Isaiah 51.7) Today’s translation; trust the foundations God has built, do not let Evil get to your soul, engage in the process of Hope. This is something I can do, today, now.
