“The Detective detects the mystery in the darkness of the cellar heart.” Psalm 64.6
Until yesterday, I looked at honesty as something we expressed to others and desired in our hearts. The issues surrounding honesty are real, however we often confront and deal with them on a personal level. David recognizes that God is able to see the truth in the dark corners of our hearts and do something about it. My realization is that this need and desire for honesty is a true thirst in my life as well as a unknown need in my relationship with others.
At work, we talk about accepting and learning from performance reviews. Usually we look to have a financial reward at the same time, however the review is important. David expresses a need for something different.
We carry another thirst with us. We crave honest relationships! We desperately want to know how we win at work, in relationships, and life. It is not that we look at life as a game; we want to know how we play, perform, or live in a way that will bring us the best possible result. We look for a clear and simple understanding of what we can do to be the best. We want our lovers and friends to be honest and loyal to us. We seek to understand the purpose and meaning of life. Even without finding meaning we desire honest commentary on our actions.
David understands God’s ability to quench our thirst. David is quick to express how he wants God to act on this knowledge. Taking action is mandatory not an option!
Understanding that others are looking for honesty carries with it a serious responsibility. Do I understand how others can win in their life dialogue with me? Have I taken the time to listen to them and communicate honestly in a their language? Am I willing to be mutually accountable? Am I willing to understand my responsibilities in and for the lives of others?
Do we want to deal with this thirst? Again, it is our choice.
