In an office building where everyone was focused on residency, visa, and communities, the wall light lit the room physically and symbolically. Sitting and waiting brought with it a quiet reflection with the honeycomb pattern and light contrast dominating one’s view. There were different stories, of what it meant to belong, how the shape of our communities is a strength within itself, and even the way structure within flexed to the wilds where it could be found.
The light plays and shadows have lingered on in my mind, long after I returned home. As the morning light spills over the city, bringing it to life, I am reminded of the illustrations I experienced as I sat in front of the wall light.
We are in this thing called life together. We can run. As far as we run, we will still be together. We can be at war with each other. As adversarial as we might be, we are still family. We can isolate ourselves from the others. In our aloneness, the thirst and longing to belong will always be there. I relate to the individuals in my community as we form life’s honeycomb.
Working together gifts each with relationship and friendship. This is not to suggest that everything will be harmonious. Individuals bring their views, values, and perspectives to each moment in life. Life is not about working towards uniformity. It is about recognising and celebrating who we are, as we are. When there is a chance to send a message, we echo Paul to the special people in his life; “Hello to Urbanus, our companion in Christ’s work, and my good friend Stachys.” (Romans 16.9).
Life’s darkness and bright spots impact everyone. Depending on the view and angle, it may seem to be better or worse than someone next to us. If we step back, we will see the honeycomb of events, relationships, and opportunities that dominate life impact us individually and collectively. In recognising my community, opportunities emerge. Hope is realised on our edges.
Today I can connect and build towards the future.
