From my university training, I understand the connection between soil, moisture, climate, and the food which born in the combination. On a macro level, Florida compared to Nebraska and California, it is intuitive that each would be linked to specific foods. However, I admit to my scepticism as a friend waxed eloquently about the differences soils, angle of the hillside and resulting sunlight, and other factors made on the fruits of the land.
What I could not imagine then, I now accept as truth-filled reality now. Honey can be incredibly different and nuanced by the bee’s favourite blossoms and environment. Lemons from Sicily magically captures the terroir, resulting in a fruit which is both familiar and yet distinctly unique. Examples in France, California, United Arab Emirates, India, and Italy all give witness to the truth I struggled to accept on faith as I listened to the stories.
The honey at breakfast reminds me that I was a sceptic and now a believer. Our opportunities to discover and embrace more exist in the realities of our lives.
Look for the new and the different. Being open to what is being added to one’s life is a window into more. Yesterday’s scepticism can be challenged. An old observation still rings true today; “In n our time, something new has been added. What Moses and the prophets witnessed to all those years has happened.” (Romans 3.21)
Taste, experience, and reflect on what follows. Often under the guiding hand of a friend, I am awed by the experience of what I only imagined. As stunning as certain foods have been, I find myself changed because of the unconditional gifts of compassion, empathy, and belonging I have received from others. With my reflection and memories still fresh, I find myself looking at today with renewed clarity and hope.
Share the story with everyone willing to listen. I am thankful that I was gifted with a vision years ago, even though I did not believe. Even in my doubt, I carried a sense of wonder and hope that it might exist.
