Several elections ago, someone was asked why she voted for a particular candidate. Her answer was simple. She explained that both candidates had actively canvassed her neighborhood. In fact, she said that she has spoken at length to both candidates personally. Their words and ideas did not persuade her. Something else made the difference.
“I found that the measure of an individual is best taken by the impact they have on others. Both candidates talked a good game. The follow-up visits I received from their supporters were equally impressive! They had great talking points and good ideas. Yet, the single act of one young supporter made the difference for me. Instead of just talking, he stopped and picked up a stray piece of trash on the sidewalk in front of my house. He did not impose or assume; rather he walked to the end of the block and put it in the trashcan. He did not know if anyone was watching, it just needed to be done. He walked back to the other end of the block and continued his efforts to call on prospective voters.”
One act of caring made the difference.
When I read one writers description of an individual, “he was a thoroughly good man. He had led everyone in his house to live worshipfully before God, was always helping people in need, and had the habit of prayer,” (Acts 10.2) there was no doubt in my mind about the individual. He was a spiritual leader in the best sense of the word.
My life is going to tell a story today. The script will be unique along with my response to it. What unfolds will give those around me an indication of the face and character of the God I hold close to my heart. My actions will speak far louder than my values. My words will tell a story greater than my priorities. In truth, my actions will reflect my true values, my words my real priorities. Today is your and my opportunity to take the indicative into the real, regardless.
