I have always been in a rush. I remember it being more fun to run than to walk. If I could use a bicycle even better! When motors were within reach, moving at pace consumed every aspect of my life and living. I always wanted to get to the next place, even as I was arriving at my current destination.
Along the way, two changes reshaped my views. The first was a simple recognition that I could celebrate life and every moment. The cliché calling me to “smell the roses” took seed and eventually becoming an important value I hold close to my heart. There was a second change which has been far slower in its growth within my beliefs. Unless I bring others along with me on the journey of growth and change, most of what I care about will never become sustainable.
First a disclaimer. This is not a call to uniformity in the values and goals shared between friends. It is also not an expression of superior insights and understanding. Everyone is on an individual journey, tailored by hopes, beliefs, and opportunities.
The calling I hear as universal is to help and positively share in the journeys we are on. Life keeps reminding me of three truths.
First, it is an infinite journey not a series of steps to predetermined destination. We have an opportunity to life to the maximum, filled with a sense of hope and enduring peace. There is a lingering warning which comes along with the opportunity; “I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime.” (1 Peter 1.6).
Second, it is never about one deciding for another. It is always about cheering everyone to be better than s/he is. It is about shouldering each other’s burdens, always being there in good times and bad.
Third, it is willing to be quiet, present, and available. Being a part of a community leads to giving and letting go at the same time.
Welcome to the infinite journey.
