As I sat on the edge of a planter on a nearby island, I enjoyed the gentleness of the plants and a few lone flowers. Naturally, the island is dominated by sand. The off-white grains that form the foundation of the island are never absent. You can sense their presence in the air. The natural humidity from the water captures and holds varying amounts at all times of the year. From walking to driving, to just being, you can sense the sand’s presence. In contrast, the gentleness of the plants and occasional flowers stood out.
As I sat, alone as far as I could see in any direction, I found myself listening to the lessons lie wanted to share.
Harmony is often underrated. Given how annoying sand can be, it is natural to imagine what the island would be like if there was a lot less of it. In the quietness, the question of balance never left. The architects have not tried to erase the sand’s presence. Rather, it is balanced with sandy-coloured buildings, selects pockets of plants and trees, and an overall spirit of harmony of what was and what could be.
Diversity is a strength when we believe in it. As I think of the different materials, and how they come together in form and purpose, I find myself thinking of cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Great foundations are the result of designers leveraging the strengths of different forms and materials. The idea that a single thread could support a community does not work unless the thread naturally brings the differences together. Kindness, care, and compassion are binding agents that make a community stronger than its parts.
There are opportunities for everyone. We may not readily see them, yet life reminds me that they are here. Adversaries can be allies; differences can be strengths. Old words replay in new forms; “Now they are on the outs. But with the door held wide open for you, they have a way back in.” (Romans 11.31)
Today is for building a better future, worthy of the Divine Architect.
