When one watches a trial, at the end of the first half the verdict is clear. Frequently witnesses are credible, facts plain, and the conclusions obvious. On several occasions I have found myself creating an excuse to skip out on the rest of the boring conversations to come. What is the point? Everything to be said has been. The verdict is just waiting for confirmation. How could anyone miss this conclusion?
I can be so wrong! After talking with those who watched the whole story, took in all the testimony, and weighed every piece of evidence, the obvious isn’t so obvious. There was a different way to seeing the obvious testimony. The facts were, from a different perspective, quite different. The story has different endings, drivers, and relationships. The process, from beginning through the end, revealed something quite startling to those of us who left at halftime. The game wasn’t as over as we thought.
On an interim basis the winners in today’s world are clear. They are the ones with the biggest, best, and most toys. They are the ones with the great views and luxury items. They are the ones with power, status, and comfort. They are the winners!
Yet the story isn’t over. The final winners may not be easily seen or even known at this point. If history tells us anything…we might want to reconsider our conclusions.
In one case the giant collapsed. The questions were obvious then as they should be now. The full story came to light then, will we let it now? “Who is behind the collapse of Tyre, the Tyre that controlled the world markets? Tyre's merchants were the business tycoons. Tyre's traders called all the shots. God-of-the-Angel-Armies ordered the crash to show the sordid backside of pride and puncture the inflated reputations.” (Isaiah 23.8, 9)
Your story and mine are still being written. Yes we have interim results. We have good stuff and less so. We have successes and results short of the goal. The real question lies in the full story, starting with the present.
