I remember one Saturday night as if it was yesterday. We went to dinner as a family and met friends at a favourite restaurant in Pune. The restaurant on MG Road is gone, while two memories continue. The evening was filled with laughter, conversation, and fantastic food.
The first incident was my mom’s trip to the kitchen to discuss how a dish was made. She had mused over the ingredients and possible techniques during the meal. As we were moving to the final course, she stood up and announced she would get the “answers” from the chef. What seemed a long time for an eleven-year-old ended when she came back, smiling and laughing at “I should have known”. I never found out the secret to the spices and making the dish.
The second incident was the birth of a lengthy introduction that I still enjoy. Halfway through dessert, the waiter asked if anyone wanted tea or coffee. In response, Dad ordered an espresso and Mom a coffee. I could not figure this out! First, these were on the do-not-consume list. Second, this was a first, especially in front of everyone! Others ordered tea, making my surprise as significant and complete as possible.
Beyond an introduction to an enjoyable beverage, this experience was my invitation and introduction to growing up. I experienced the joy of learning from others and challenging traditions gifted to us from the past. It was a fantastic revelation, especially for someone my age. Origin 33’s cup reminded me of the mantra from that day.
Always be looking to learn and grow. If one does not know, ask. If lost, reflect, explore, and improve one’s perspective. Knowing and reaching for a better future is at the heart of growth. An old writer described it this way; “The law brought nothing to maturity. Another way – Jesus! – a way that does work, that brings us right into the presence of God, is put in its place.” (Hebrews 7.19). Awareness opens the door to learning, which, in turn, is the foundation for my steps today.
