The scene as one walks over the bridge to Al Maryah Island has changed over the years. To the left and the right, the island below has been transformed through investment from a sandy construction site to roads, walkways, bicycle paths, benches, and shade trees. The quantity of planning and work that the results represent is amazing. From where things were a few years ago, I find myself catching my breath. Frankly, I did not imagine the results and the investment that continues. This is a long-term play. It is, visibly and tangibly vibrant. From a fledging idea, it now looks like a sustainable city within a city.
As I think of the concepts behind the island, the vision and beliefs that went into it are on full display. There are lessons I can take from this that can help guide me in the day ahead.
Moving forward requires investment. Without it, life slowly yet surely fades, flickers, and then is no more. Everything starts with the basics. Awareness, kindness, and empathetic action. It often goes unnoticed when it is led by others. As one grows, the mantle slowly passes to oneself. The change occurs differently for everyone. I look back and forward, knowing the moment when I realised my mantle was firmly on my shoulders.
Investment starts with the heart. There are naturally two components, understanding the need, and acting to fulfil the need. I have come to appreciate the role investing plays in personal development to develop actionable skills and capabilities. The investment does in there; it continues with learning how to use the investment for good. Candidly, “That’s also why you pay taxes – so that an orderly way of life can be maintained.” (Romans 13.6)
The need to invest never ends. Every successful mountain top offers a view of what is beyond. As I age, new opportunities emerge. They are different than when I was young. They do share a common theme; the opportunity to make a difference. Today is a time to pay dividends on the investment with kindness and care.
