Actually knowing something to be true can be tricky. Do we trust our instincts? Do we rely on the facts? How can we know for certain either or both are true? When it comes to directions in London every licensed taxi driver has passed the “Knowledge”. There are thousands of streets in the city that sounds similar. Nothing is intuitive by the name or sound. Everything changes with one ways, dead-ends, and ongoing construction. The Knowledge is designed to address the past and prepare one for the future. As a result, visitors and residents alike receive a service that is reliable, trustworthy, and carries of reputation of honor.
I wonder if others could say the same about me. I hope so. Yet as a new morning dawns with promises of bright sun, blue skies, and soaring temperatures, I wonder. What if everyone knew what I know? Would the knowledge change their view? Could the insights affirm their worst fears?
Ironically no house is perfectly clean. We intuitively know and accept this fact. What we don’t accept is false motivations or representations. Occasionally London taxi drivers get lost or take a wrong turn. I have had several who have stopped the meter long before we have gotten to our destination and openly apologized! I find myself reacting with a shared sense of wonder, admiration, and compassion. It could happen to anyone. Mistakes are a fact of life. Honesty, relationship respect, and honor are more important that perfect execution.
I know I don’t always remember the point. Far too often I catch myself looking in the mirror, concerned about what others think. It is as if I have lost the plot! London’s taxi drivers have a different message. It is as if they have a connection with Divinity. I can hear their conversation after a successful trip; “for the message you gave me, I gave them; and they took it, and were convinced that I came from you. They believed that you sent me.” (John 17.8)
Today’s aspiration makes a difference. Everything is possible. Anything can be done.
