The Christmas lamp glowed in the corner of the table. It was bright, sparkling, and full of movement. As I quietened down the noise within myself, it was fun to let the lamp guide me through a reflection on the season and story beyond.
Christmas’ ideals are universal and timeless. Unconditional acceptance, community, kindness, and care are the four foundation pillars. The example set at Christmas where everyone goes into action is a model for every day of the year. The form and function will change to fit the season, yet the essentials that make Christmas special fit every moment in one’s life. I love the reminder and the invitation.
Gifts are never truly deserved. I am speaking only for myself when I say this, even as I suspect the same could be true of others. The idea that Divinity gifted me with Christmas, is amazing. “Everything comes from him; Everything happens through him; Everything ends up in him. Always glory! Always praise! Yes. Yes. Yes.” (Romans 11.36). Receiving a gift is not the end but rather the beginning of the story. The story continues with my acceptance followed by everything I do with what I have received.
It is easy to forget. The rest of the idea is what is often missed is that each moment is an opportunity to remember. There is no doubt that my life is filled with missed opportunities and choices I wish I had made differently. I do know that this is, for me, motivation to remember and do something with the lessons I have. I can put my learning to work.
In the joy of the season, my heart goes out to those captured by darkness. The pain, loss, and struggle are tangible pieces in many lives. One sees the reflection in the media around us, knowing it extends far beyond. My prayer is that I can be a Christmas lamp in their life, today and in the days to come. Now is the time of Christmas. May it always be remembered. May we realise a better future, together.
