The lamp kept drawing me into a reflection. The restaurant setting was relaxed and the staff was politely attentive. Everything was set for deep conversations filled with listening and exploring. With no obvious intent, the corner lamp was, for me, a life-teaching metaphor taking me to places filled with mirrors, awareness, and lessons. As I reflect, I see the day ahead differently.
There are shades within me that impact how others see and experience the light I will share. It is easy for me to forget how much my non-verbal actions reveal. During the day, I share my values and priorities through my actions. I reveal my beliefs in my decisions. A combination of truths mixed with my fears, uncertainties, and doubts live in the experiences and relationships I have with others. Each element is part of the shade that shapes the colour, intensity, and directions revealed by the light and the lamp that is me.
While I shape the light, I do not control what others do with this light. Far too often, I catch myself worrying about what others will do in her/his life. Yes, my light can help or hinder their journey. It may influence their choices. It can even colour the alternatives they are able to see. However, what another does with the light in their lives is part of the freedom they have and that I desperately desire. My opportunity, especially at this moment, is to exercise this freedom with intention and purpose.
No matter what is within, as bright as it might potentially be, unless I share, nobody will know it is there. I am accountable for what I share and why. There is an old warning that comes to mind; “So, since we’re out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we’re free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind?” (Romans 6.15)
The light I want to share today is described best by compassion, care, and kindness. It is time to shine.
