The decorations for National Day are out on display. To the new tourist, the colours remind many of Christmas. I find it is a helpful starting point. It is easy to forget that our communities and national identities are a gift. When I forget, I drift into a mindset that it is all about me. When I remember, I find myself in a space of family, caring, and respect. The contrast is stark, a light and darkness kind of reminder. As I let the streetlamps illuminate my path and the steps ahead, I think of where I am and where I want to be.
Life is never about my journey. Life is about our journey. To express this with different words, I am part of a larger story. It is one that I am invited, called, to be a part of. At times, I lose sight of this. “And then what happened? Well, when Israel tried to be right with God on her own, pursuing her own self-interest, she didn’t succeed. The chosen ones of God were those who let God pursue his interest in them, and as a result, received his stamp of legitimacy. The “self-interest Israel” became thick-skinned toward God.” (Romans 11.7). My prayer is that I always remain in harmony with Divinity, collaborating with Divinity and the gods to empower the Divine life within me.
Life is found through actions shaped with kindness and care. My experience in a country that will soon celebrate its 52nd birthday, is that I am welcomed, respected, and honoured as a guest. In the spirit of accepting this gift, I find myself called to live it out in the contacts I have each day. While I do not always get it right, there are moments when it all comes together! Cheering with others at a football game, breaking bread and sharing life, and looking to engage today. I can be a lamp, echoing the light I have been given, sharing the light that burns within.
Today begins as I look back. It is lived by stepping forward.
