Legacies

With change and or the passing of any person of reputation or standing, my mind always moves to their legacy.  What will it be?  Will others take the best from their life and continue to champion the cause?  Will the legacy be short lived or something that forever becomes a signpost for those that follow?  This week is yet another moment to stop and reflect.

I would note that this type of reflection is occurring far too often.  Maybe I was just blissfully ignorant in my youth.  I doubt that the death rate has changed that dramatically, especially for the worse.  I can see how change is increasing, but the traditional upheaval associated with it is changing as well.  Accepting change has now expanded in scope to include an emotional expectation that change is inevitable part of life today.  Yet, even with expectation and regular appearance, I don’t think I have gotten any more comfortable with the idea of thinking and reflecting on other’s legacies, much less grabbling with what my own might be.

It is the latter that causes me to pause today.  You and I are building a legacy that others will reflect on at different points in time.  We may not have completed what we have started when their review takes place.  We may or may not be available to answer their questions.  In this context I wonder what type of legacy I want as well as puzzle about the truth of my legacy whatever it is.

Jesus left those who would follow his steps an interesting legacy they often miss.  I am one of those who often forget just how great the opportunities are.  His words lay out the challenge.  “The person who trusts me will not only do what I'm doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I've been doing.  You can count on it.”  (John 14.12)

You and I can be vehicles of even greater compassion, mercy, and love.  Today is the day!  It’s now.
