Legacy

We love our heroes, especially those that have been around for a time.  Aging athletes that honor our adoration are classic examples.  Regardless of the reasons for our attention, in the end, most end up putting the woman or man on a pedestal.  I do not know why others do it, but my reasons lie in their endurance, consistency, respect for others. 
The risks with heroes lie in their humanity.  Just because “he[/she] had been around a long time and everyone was more or less in awe of him,” (Acts 8.11) does not mean he/she will not make mistakes.  Depending on the hero and the timing of their stumble, we may or may not be willing to forgive and forget.  Usually, once the spell is broken the hero is lost to us forever.
With this in mind, I will be candid.  I never want to be a hero.  There are too many ways I can and will fall.  I will never be able to stand the test of time.  I will always know the truth of my weaknesses.  At best, I will have responded to the opportunity in one moment in time. 
It is this reality in a time where heroes are being recognized for their achievement that forces me to see the truth in God's call to you and me.  A hero is someone that achieves the extraordinary when called upon.  When others cannot accomplish the goal, a hero rises to the occasion.  When others fear to respond, heroes rise to the occasion.  When others fade with the pressure, heroes press on to the finish.  Each description frames opportunity God gives you and me today.
We are called to be God's heroes.  Others may demand revenge; we are called to mercy.  Others may ask for justice; we are asked to be merciful.  Others strive for superiority; we are given an opportunity to be humbled.
You and I are free to respond to God's call in a way of our choosing.  Our response defines our legacy and destiny.  God's calling is one worthy of our souls.
