Letting go is not something I have ever found to be easy. My grip is especially tight when I feel I am being called into battle for an injustice. As I reflect on the beginnings of a new day, I can hear the call to let go of an old battle and embrace a new one. I am caught in a character right out of the psalms; “And you, Babylonians – ravagers! A reward to whoever gets back at you for all you’ve done to us;” (Psalm 137.8) My voice does not end there as I turn to the battle at hand.
Life continues to remind me that I have an opportunity to frame the past and the present differently. The lessons are here, as is my choice.
Each moment of your life and mine is an opportunity. We have the freedom, responsibility, and accountability for the choice we can and must make. Whatever has happened, it is now history. We may choose to respond to the actions of another, however, the past does not dictate what we do in the moment. We are free to choose. Will we step positively forward, lifting those within our reach up or will we go to war? The choice may not be exclusive. The lesson reminder is that we are free to choose what we will do in the moment which is now.
Not every battle to right a wrong, correct an injustice, or hold someone accountable is mine. I do not think anyone is excused. I find my ego creeps in, thinking it needs to embrace the battle to right every wrong. The lesson is to listen and ensure I hear the call to action with my name. When I do, I find it is specific, challenging, and open ended. It requires my full attention and resolve. In responding with an embrace, I find myself letting go.
We are never alone. Others are called. Sharing the rallying cry, lifting our voices in lament and celebration is healthy. In my letting go, I create room for Divine action.
