As long as I can remember, I have been around an artist that worked with wood. From custom cabinets to hand turned bowls and through to soapbox derbies (handmade vehicles that race by coasting down a hill), from my earliest memories these were a part of my life. Much of what I learned came from observation and wanting to be like Dad. For decades, I thought I had seen it all! Lathes, planers, shapers, spindle sanders, table saws, mitre saws, and bench tools just began to start the list. It was a wonderful state of ignorance.
I first accepted an invitation to see beyond four years ago. The same father that I thought knew it all introduced me to something even greater! Every two years, Atlanta hosts the International Woodworking Federation's show. On my first visit, and now again on my second, I am beginning to grasp how little I have actually imagined.
My imagination is still spinning, even though I only saw 25% of the show! Machines, tools, adapters, gadgets, and materials took me to places I have never considered. It was wonderful, inspiring, and humbling all at the same time. Simply walking the floors was serious fun. Even as I was able to get a few items, I found my wish list growing. Making sawdust is filled with fun adventures and possibilities.
I leave the show with a lingering thought. While I often let my imagination go wild, perhaps there are places God is willing to take me that are even higher, greater, and more wonderful. I might think I know the boundaries, yet the precedence is of scope change was well established before I got to the scene. “When the apostles in Jerusalem received the report that Samaria had accepted God's Message, they sent Peter and John down to pray for them to receive the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 8.14, 15)
With today's dawn, we have the opportunity to let the Spirit take us to places we never imagined. God will walk with us, showing us new possibilities, inviting us to experience heaven today.
