There is something magical about leverage. An investment on your part combined with a bank can equal a house, car, and the opportunity to splurge with a credit card. Yes, you have to pay it back. In the interim, you get to enjoy the moments at hand in a way that otherwise would not be possible.
Leverage occurs anytime one action works in harmony with another to create something greater. I see leadership as leverage. The conductor of an orchestra leverages the collective abilities of a group of musicians that often exceeds anything anyone imagined. A band member leverages the abilities of the group to give something unique to those willing to listen.
As I think of different way one and one equals three or more, I realize that it is the unique combination of people, opportunity, and a moment in time where one is willing to act that creates that greatest leverage. The awareness started with a leader reflecting on what our team could do. It was a candid expression that came with more insight than many realized at the time.
We have a great story that potentially can become richer and deeper. It is a story that we have been invited into. We can help write and shape its story line. May want to control it. I do not find life or leverage works that way. Leverage is about working with others to do what s/he is willing and able to do. At times, help will come. On other occasions, we will walk through a difficult section. The process follows a familiar path that was described by a father long ago. “As we keep his commands, we live deeply and surely in him, and he lives in us. And this is how we experience his deep and abiding presence in us: by the Spirit he gave us.” (1 John 3.24)
We may not always realize the heart of the story we are in. Seeking to know and embrace the principles and commands opens up the opportunity for more. Today is the beginning of more.
