An older Chinese couple and middle-aged daughter approached me yesterday looking for directions. As I tried to sense where they were trying to go between the broken English and Mandarin, I opened my phone to the maps. I thought I heard the word “mall”. Given where we were standing, I asked directly, “Are you trying to go to the Dubai Mall?”
“Yes.”
“Here is where we are on the map. Here is where the metro stop is. Here is the mall. Given that there are three of you, I recommend a taxi downstairs and outside.”
“Taxi?”
“Cheap, fast, same price.”
With beaming smiles and a Mandarin thank-you, they headed downstairs to a taxi and a short ride to the mall. I turned and reflected on seeing an unusual light near the steps. A Whispered reminder of how this family found an answer they did not expect.
Looking beyond the edges of one’s imagination will bring new doorways within reach. I realised I have constructed boundaries of what I am willing to see. When I tear down my walls, I find myself out in the open with new alternatives and paths for exploration. It begins with being willing to be outside the field of knowing.
Insight comes from places we do not imagine in advance. When I let go of my preconceived answers, I find endless possibilities waiting for me. Sources of wisdom can be found in the young and old, experienced and naïve. When I remember that Divinity is living in all her children, I recognise how She is trying to speak to me. It is a modern retelling of the encounter centuries ago. “Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of the Highest God. He met Abraham, who was returning from ‘the royal massacre,’ and gave him his blessing.” (Hebrews 7.1). Love, kindness, and care (Divinity) will show when one least expects.
It takes courage to hear from the unknown. I was honoured to receive the gift of trust from three strangers. I hope I can give the same in response to Divinity’s voice today.
