The natural light of the day had given way to darkness. Standing at the front doors of the apartment building reminded me of the essential role lighting plays when it is designed for safety and movement. Of the various light examples on display, one stood out. The short lamppost is on before any other light. I cannot think of an instance, early or late, stormy or sunny when it was not there when I needed it.
I paused, wondering if this minor design feature was a metaphor for so much more. Life took advantage of the silence within my mind and heart to share whispers that linger as today begins.
Commitment and consistency change everything that follows. Each gives birth to trust. Together, they are the go-to destination for support, dialogue, and friendship. As I appreciated the light and its role, I imagined my communities with renewed clarity. The commitment and consistency in our lives bind us to one another. We are stronger, more resilient, and engaged. In my experience of the two, I find courage and hope. With others sharing my awareness and the insights that follow, I have the support I need to make a difference.
Commitment and consistency become tangible with time. As important as the awareness of each is, when one adds time to the mix, awareness quietly moves in and takes its place within my heart as a belief. Looking in the mirror, I realise the formula applies to my commitment and consistency. The advice from earlier generations still rings true; “You need to stick it out, staying with God’s plan so you’ll be there for the promised completion.” (Hebrews 10.36) Commitment and consistency can be more than words. Time and action will create character markers for my heart and soul.
Light is always helpful, especially when it is proportional to the moment. Today will come with light and darkness. Within each will be my opportunity to be present in support. I can be a light in my community, silently, firmly, and confidently. I will stand, caring to make a difference.
