We live in a world where results matter. Most of the time ethics, relationships, and even personal priorities slide in the effort to competitively win in the rat race we all live in. People in the inner cities, casual suburbs, and even more remote locations all are susceptible to the demands. Over time, even the strongest loose sight of the very values they hold closest to their hearts.
It is interesting to watch people. I find myself giving strangers nicknames linked to their external behavior. Frenetic is a familiar tag. Out of Control is another popular one. Even Silent yet Carries Agenda find a frequent home. Given that I am not worried with having the names stick, there is no particular purpose other than reminding myself about what I continue to observe.
Sadly, I find myself wearing far to many of the labels during the course of the day. I wish were always true to the meaning my name. According to a coffee cup gift, my names means “determined guardian”. I doubt either of my parents were aware of this when they gave me this name, but I am sure that they and I would gladly wear this with pride. If only it were consistently true!
Until then, I am much like the people I observe. Candidly, I keep finding God reminding me that Divinity knows the true scoop. Nothing is hidden. A wise man once said it well; “We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we've done wrong, on him.” (Isaiah 53.6)
The real question today is simply this. Will I wear my temporary name reflecting my wanderings or will I be true to God’s name for me? The answer is not a trivial one. We decide our futures. We also nurture or destroy the lives around us. Not being anchored is never an option. We must choose or life will do it for us. Today is one where we make the difference.
