In the mysterious connection between ourselves and Divinity, it often feels like it is minion to master, slave to owner, obligated to the all powerful source of what one does not have. Everything wrapped in terms and conditions, mandated and required, with little choice to anyone involved. It is interesting to hear another’s honesty as s/he speaks of rules, obligations, and things one must do if one is to be loved.
While I understand the feeling, I witnessed a small gesture that reminded me that I often get the relationship all wrong! Over a fun lunch, a difference between husband and wife on how much was waiting to go in the suitcase became the fodder of shared laughter!
“You liked that food so much that our luggage is overflowing!”
“Yes, I liked it, but, I did not get that much.”
“There are at least fifty boxes!”
“No, not fifty! Maybe five.”
As we shared in their laughter, I realized that the gentleness and willingness to share life in a spirit of love was energizing. After we parted, an idea came up around his favorite vegetarian BBQ’d meat. It is a Singaporean specialty and actually quite good!
“What about getting some vegetarian bakkwa?”
“Great idea!”
“I think 5 boxes would be the right amount.”
Even as began to I think about it, I was laughing. Five boxes, fifty sheets, perfect! A few hours later, we reconnected for our goodbyes for now. As the conversation wrapped up, a bag mysteriously appeared between the couple. As she looked on in wonder, he pulled the string on the bag to open the package.
“My favorite!”
“Fantastic. Glad you like it.”
“What else is in the bag?”
“Five boxes of the best jerky!”
As the quantity sunk in, more laughter and conversation followed. I think of the scene and still smile. It was as if I had received the best gift! Nothing mandated, nothing forced. “Honor God, our God; worship his rule! Holy. Yes, holy.” (Psalm 99.5) Life best shared without conditions. I doubt the bakkwa will last long!
