Singapore is a foodies’ paradise. In an amazing range of venues, small and larger, expensive and amazingly cheap, limited menu items or extensive, there is something for everyone. When you talk to someone about a menu item, everyone seems to have a favorite place to indulge in a specific menu item. Thinking of olive fried rice, many have a strong view! Hor fun, dosas, or durian desserts are linked to specific locations. Even the thought of cheesecake brings up an establishment or two.
As I think of my favorites, I realize that there are choices. As I went for a back-up when one of my favorites was closed, I was confronted by several harsh realities.
Favorite places are favorite because of flavors, taste, textures, and the experience that follows. Rarely is it whimsical! In the disappointment that followed a meal at a back-up place, I was reminded of the old psalm; “All who serve handcrafted gods will be sorry – and they were so proud of their ragamuffin gods! On your knees, all you gods – worship him!” (Psalm 97.7)
Great places that become favorites often have an X factor. In my experience, the best X factor comes through service. You are recognized, appreciated, and always welcomed. It is as if the visit is a special gift and you are the grand prize! One feels good even as the orders go in. If there is a substandard moment, it is quickly forgiven because one feels that s/he knows the chef and the care and passion that goes into every dish.
One never grows tired of great experiences. At the same time, I find myself willing to go hungry before automatically settling for something I know is a distant second best. Great food and service always brings me back. Add a good price point and I am likely a regular.
Even as I think about my favorite places, my body reacts. I want to visit! In the morning, the best coffee places comes to mind – fantastic lattes, consummate professional barista service, and conversations that are always interesting.
