Why change? Isn’t life just fine as it is? Even if life isn’t as smooth and peaceful, why not just preserve the best and improve the rest? Why take chances with the good things?
I wish I could understand how others see life. If we were able to share our views, just imagine the possibilities of how we might work together! The challenge is simply that we often find it difficult to share our views at all, especially if they go beyond the immediate. The challenge extends across the spectrum of society. Senior corporate managers often cannot see what those who work for them do with clarity and insight. Politicians have a tough time conveying their viewpoints to each other. When it extends to the media and the general public the challenges multiplies exponentially!
Traditionally the view is that unless we see and understand we cannot work together. I would like to suggest something different. What if we worked with the same motivation and stepped out in trust, affirming our shared motivation along the way?
Imagine a world shaped and nurtured by a simple formula along the following lines. “Anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in your love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal.” (John 12.25)
When I stop and reflect, I realize I have experienced glimpses of this formula in action. The memories of those days continue to inspire and shape my values and priorities. The experiential trust built during those days continues to shape my relationships. Even the problems and challenges, successful and unsuccessful, form and reform themselves as living examples of how one can work across different views within a group of people. The underlying strength was our motivation and the trust initially given by one and eventually shared by all.
Life is full of uncertainty and obstacles. You and I have the opportunity to make a difference today. Question is – can we find and hold onto the same motivation? Will we trust love to make life different?
