I stepped onto the escalator and found myself in a classroom. Life was teaching, and I was listening with nothing to distract me. The questions were flying, and with only one imaginary student in the imaginary class, everything was silent. Where are you going? How do you plan to get there? What will you do with each step?
Choices mark out destinations. In this case, I had stepped onto the escalator, and my destination was the floor above. This would lead me to a doorway that was yet another choice to take me to a new destination. Life seems more complicated; in reality, each moment is a choice with a destination. The choice may be small or big. The destination may be a stepping stone or a monumental life milestone. At times, I find it hard to see what the next step is leading to. Stepping off is a choice, though it rarely leads to the destination of my dream.
Getting to my destination is easier with help. It could be an escalator, train, or car. Just as easily, it could be the teacher willing to share, a mentor dialogue where I am willing to listen, or a friend willing to walk with me, if only for a time. In every situation, there is someone in our life willing to help. The most constant person is the one we usually do not remember. I call her Divinity.
Movement leading to a destination has a foundation in intent. When I add to intent, I reach for courage, perseverance, and faith. Most steps come with challenges. In addition to the normal opposition from others with their own agenda, there are barriers and obstacles that block one from moving forward. The warning remains true in my life; “So let’s keep at it and eventually arrive at the place of rest, not drop out through some sort of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4.11)
The movement took me upwards. I knew I had what I needed since Care and Kindness were with me. They made each movement richer, faster, and so much better.
