I want to even the score. Life is unfair. Injustice abounds in more places than I care to recognize. Bad things happen to the innocent. Someone needs to deal with this! If I don’t do something then who will? If this isn’t a topic of conversation and action among us will anyone else take up the cause? Someone must act, right?
I find as my adrenaline flows and hair begins to rise that there is a natural outcome to individual actions. If the actions are of truth, compassion, and love then good things are born. If the converse is true, actions full of hatred, revenge, and self glorification are realized then a cycle of destruction is born. These two births occur regardless of my actions. The natural outcome of our actions will follows no matter how much influence and shaping we try to do. The question is simply this – where do I use my heart and soul? Is my efforts focused on supported the natural outcomes of destruction? Am I looking to follow one great birth of hope with another?
The question has haunted men and women for generations. Evil abounds in every time and place. It thrives in your life and mine, especially if left unchecked. The reality is that unless we are agents of hope we will realize the same outcomes of generations past. When “the Master, God-of-the-Angel-Armies, will send a debilitating disease on his robust Assyrian fighters. Under the canopy of God's bright glory a fierce fire will break out. Israel's Light will burst into a conflagration. The Holy will explode into a firestorm, and in one day burn to cinders every last Assyrian thornbush.” (Isaiah 10.16, 17) It wasn’t an isolated act. It was the natural outcome of an evil thread of life.
You and I have a choice today. We have the freedom to choose what type of life we will give birth to. We can be parents of hope, stewards of compassion, and messengers of mercy. The converse is equally available to all. In the quietness we will decide.
